Diet and Nutrition Diet naturally plays a very important part in helping you to lose weight - and more importantly to maintain a healthy weight. Even though surgical treatments for obesity are highly effective it will still be very important for you to follow a healthy and well-balanced diet. We don't believe in 'crash' diets either as they can be harmful to your health and won't help you to maintain a healthy weight in the long-term. When you reduce your calorie intake too drastically your metabolism naturally slows down to make sure you have enough calories to keep your body going. That's why gradual weight loss is a much more effective way to lose weight - plus of course it's very important to make sure you eat a balanced, varied, nutritious diet containing food from all the major food groups including carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables, proteins and healthy fats such as olive oil. Exercise is also very important of course and you can find more information on this in the Healthy Lifestyle section of the website. Top Tips Start a food diary to keep an eye on what you're eating - writing it down can often make you more aware of how much you're eating. Try swapping the foods you like for healthier options, for instance if you have a sweet tooth, swap cakes and biscuits for a bowl of fruit salad, a handful of apricots or a low fat yoghurt. Keep a note of what you drink as well as food, alcoholic drinks can contain a high number of calories, as can very sugary fizzy drinks and squashes. |
